Special Needs Careprovider aka Respite Services Providers & Habilitation Providers

The official job title is “Direct Care Services Provider.” But what is a direct care provider exactly? It’s someone who provides respite and habilitative care. So what is that? We know it can be confusing if you’re not familiar with the terms. So here’s a quick breakdown!

Respite care - what is it?

Providing respite care is a form of “babysitting” someone with special needs. You would interact with them in their home or in the community, which allows for their family or caregiver to take a break. Respite care pay ranges between $14.70 $15.50/hr.

Habilitative care - what is it?

Habilitation is a form of tutoring for those with special needs. Habilitation provides higher pay than respite care because there are more responsibilities, like tracking data while on the job and teaching your companion different skills.

Habilitation providers help children with special needs develop and improve skills for daily living. This could include things like helping them to develop functions that they were incapable of doing on their own, and even helping them develop their social skills. You essentially become their life mentor.

With more responsibility, comes higher pay. Therefore, habilitative care pays between $16 - $17/hr.
